Street art is often thought of in connection with big cities such as New York, London or Berlin. This exhibition is about the street art scene of Tartu, a small wooden town with only 100 000 inhabitants, that is now called the street art capital of Estonia. Tartu is a university town with the motto 'the city of good thoughts'. Indeed! We believe that public space belongs to everyone and our job is to take care of it. We believe that the purpose of street art is to enrich, not ruin, public space. We also see the humour in getting caught by the police and trying to explain why the walls are “talking to us” and asking for colour.
The exhibition tells a story about small town Robin Hoods who are breaking the law in order to bring art to the streets, make our environment more meaningful and personal. It’s also about the attitude of bringing the desired change yourself instead of waiting for someone else to do it for you.
We are representing four artists who use different mediums and have different backgrounds, but share a common interest of working in public space: KAIRO, Stina Leek, GUTFACE, Edward von Lõngus.
The exhibition is organized by international street art festival Stencibility and is a part of the European Capital of Culture Tartu 2024 main programme in Europe.
